Cougars Run Over Broncos
by Joe Blenkle
The Broncos held close for most of the first half, but in the end it was Del Campo that controlled the game as Bella Vista High School's varsity football team dropped its league opener against the Cougars, 50-20, at Del Campo.
Del Campo took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter as quarterback Andy
Bryner connected with Matt Barnes for a 45-yard touchdown pass with 4:51
remaining.
Del Campo completed the PAT for the 7-0 lead - an advantage they
wouldn't give up the rest of the game.
The Cougars struck again early in the second quarter as the Broncos
coughed up the ball on a pitch from quarterback Todd Scalia to Lewis Davis.
Del Campo recovered the fumble on their own 30 and quickly drove in for a TD
on a 70-yard pass from Bryner to Barnes with 11:47 on the clock.
Bella Vista's defense via Bryan Wyckoff recorded an interception

of
Barnes on the Cougars' next possession, but the effort was wasted after Josh
Wittmeyer missed on a 41-yard field goal attempt with 8:23 left.
Del Campo's next possession also ended in an interception and BV's
first TD as Donovan Crouchet stepped in front of a pass and returned it 20
yards for the score. Todd Scalia added the extra point despite a partial
deflection and the Broncos closed the score to 13-7.
Luck stayed with the Broncos as Graham Engle recovered Bella Vista's
onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but the Broncos failed to score as the
DC defense held them to a missed field goal attempt.
Turnovers continued to plague the Cougars as Scott Jenkins recovered
a DC fumble, but the Broncos promptly turned the ball back over and Del
Campo scored again on a 64-yard run to make the game 21-7 in favor of the
Cougars with 3:05 left in the half.
The momntum decidely shifted in favor of the Cougars as the half
drew to a close as Bella Vista fumbled the ball and Del Campo recovered with
about two minutes to go.
The Cougars again drove in for a TD as Bryner connected on a 33-yard
pass with 1:38 left. Del Campo made the conversion on a run and found
themselves leading 29-7.
Del Campo continued to roll, scoring on its first two possessions of
the second half for a 43-7 lead.
The Broncos struck back on an interception by Josh Gertz with 1:42
left in the third quarter. Gertz took the ball 70-yards before he was
tripped up on the goal line for the score. Scalia's PAT made it a 43-14 game.
Del Campo only had the ball one play after the kickoff as Engle
recovered a fumble to give the ball back to the Broncos.
Bella Vista drove in for the score as Wittmeyer connected with Gertz
for a 12-yard TD with 30 seconds left to bring the score to 43-20. That
closed out Bella Vista's scoring, but the Cougars had one more TD in them -
a fourth quarter score to bring the final tally to 50-20.
